Earth Magic : Australian Boulder Opal Fob Pendant in 9ct Gold

Queensland boulder opal is the stone responsible for this mesmerising rainbow held captive inside deep earthy ironstone red. Precious opal has formed intermingled within the hard ironstone, flashing out in bursts of bold and shimmering colours as the light moves across the stone. If you didn’t believe in magic before, you will after spending some time with this little object. It’s as if there is a genie captive inside the stone.
Originally this was a fob pendant, worn attached to the watch chain belonging to an Edwardian Era lad or lass. Watches and their associated jewellery were worn by both genders at the turn of the 20th Century when this jewel was made. Being ironstone it was suitable for all the banging about that a well used fob was subject to – other opal specimens would have been much too soft to cope.
A truly unique jewel, I’ve never seen another boulder opal to match it for vibrancy and rage of colours – from bright red through teal, green and blue. Still photos can’t capture the magic of this rock, there is a video at the bottom of the page that is a better representation of its appearance.
Manufacture:
The cap for the Queensland boulder opal has been handmade in 9ct gold. There are no hallmarks present, the metal content has been verified by XRF test.
The fob measures 27.5mm (not including the bail) x 8.11mm x 7.03mm.
Weighs 2.62 grams.
Available with an optional 55.5cm (21 3/4″) 9ct gold Italian made fine curb link chain.
Condition:
In good antique condition with signs of wear commensurate with age and use. The gold loop on the cap was replaced at some point.
