Sultry Sardonyx : Antique Sardonyx Signet Ring in 9ct Rose Gold

Sardonyx is a tricky thing.
I had always assumed it was exclusively banded agate in black and white, but turns out any colour goes. This piece has a layer of white agate (sard) over orange (carnelian) It was made to have an emblem or design carved into the white surface, revealing the darker colour beneath. Somehow the sardonyx has survived a good long while without that happening, and the smooth milky mauve face is untouched. The combination of a band of white over a deep burnt orange has produced a soft mauve hue on the face of the ring – colour blending at its finest.

This ring is absolute graceful simplicity – the kind that is always in style, and therefore tricky to put a date on. Based on the style of the well rubbed 9ct hallmark and the hue of the rosy gold I’m estimating this to be an Edwardian Era ring, circa 1900. An antique unisex ring that’s ultra comfortable to wear, delightfully different in appearance, perfect to keep you company through thick and thin.

Manufacture: 
Modelled in 9ct rose gold, hallmarked 9ct to the inside of the band. The agate sardonyx hardstone is oval shaped and rub over set into a simple rose gold bezel. The shank is completely round, making it robust and ultra comfortable to wear.

The face of the ring is 11.9mm x 10.3mm
Sits 2.66mm high on the finger.
Weighs 2.24 grams.

Condition: 
There are some light scratches to the face of the sardonyx which could be buffed out if desired. There is evidence of a prior resize, but this could also be buffed out (I have not done this as it will change the ring’s antique patina). Signs of wear commensurate with age and use, nevertheless in good antique condition and ready for immediate wear.
