Together Forever : Victorian Sterling Silver Book Chain Necklace and Locket

♥Sold♥

Motifs of enduring love, affection and loyalty cover the sterling silver surfaces of this book chain necklace and large locket. The buckle features on both sides of the locket, accompanied by acanthus, fern and forget me not, all symbols used with effect and affection during the Victorian Era.

The bookchain has one engraved side and one silky smooth. The engravings on this piece are of ivy leaves, symbolic of fidelity and and longevity. I think its safe to say that this necklace and locket were a wedding or anniversary gift to a bride in the 1880’s when necklaces and lockets like these were the height of fashion. I found this set in an old mining town where I have unearthed similar treasures in the past. Each one slightly out of the ordinary, and always exceptionally skilfully made. The engraving is of particular note for its finesse and astonishing detail.

The bookchain can be worn with either the plain or engraved side facing, and can be worn with or without the locket. It fastens with a bolt ring.

Manufacture:
There are no hallmarks to be found anywhere, but both the locket and chain test as 925 Sterling Silver.

The collar length bookchain necklace measures 43cm (17″) long. The elongated engraved links are 1.6cm (5/8″) long and 7mm (1/4″) wide.
It weighs 29.8 grams.

The locket is oversized and convex on both sides. It can be worn with either side facing, both are equally beautiful. The engraving stretches from edge to edge, with a small section at the centre of one side that could be monogrammed. Inside the locket there is space for two photographs. Both of the silver frames are present and I’ve cut new acrylic inserts to keep you keepsakes in place.
The locket measures 6.5cm (2 1/2″) from the top of the bail to the bottom. It is 3.8cm (1 1/2″) wide and 1.2cm (1/2″) deep.
Weighs 15 grams.

Condition:
In good antique condition with signs of wear commensurate with age and use. There are some bumps to both the locket and the chain, but nothing that detracts from either piece. The locket opens smoothly and closes with a satisfying snap.
