Earth Tones : Antique Banded Agate Ring in 9ct Rose Gold by Wendts of Adelaide

♥Sold♥

Most of the things in my personal collection aren’t big ticket items. They’re usually a bit left of centre, things most people look right past. I fall in love with them for a million different reasons.
This banded agate ring in rose gold was the very first piece I bought at a market fair, at the beginning of my collecting journey back in 2017. I can still remember the butterflies thrill of it 🧡 All the things I love about antique jewellery in one sweet package: antique rose gold, tiny hand engraved details, a unique gemstone, and that little Wendts hallmark hiding inside the rose gold band, like a secret message.

Wendts of Adelaide is one of Australia’s earliest, longest running, and most awarded jewellery houses. Established by German immigrant JM Wendt in the mid 1800’s, the business was carried on by his step-sons and their descendants into the 1980s. I remember oogling in the windows of Wendts when I was a little girl.

This ring is an unusual one, the styling is Edwardian-meets-Art-Deco, circa 1915, but unlike most of the rings that fit this time period, this ring is modelled in rose gold, which was decidedly out of fashion at the time. It could possibly be a mourning ring from WWI, but the styling is anything but melancholy.

Manufacture:
Handmade in 9ct rose gold and hallmarked 9ct to the inside of the band, along with the makers mark Wendts, for Wendts jewellers of Adelaide, Australia.

The ring features a semi-translucent banded agate cabochon stone, which is domed on the top and on the underside. The rub-over bezel has tiny milgrain edging framing the stone. The milgrain is repeated half way down the bezel where it has been slit – a distinctive decorative element. The pinched shoulders are delicately hand engraved with a foliate design. The shank is classic half-round.

The banded agate is approximately 9.65mm in diameter.
The ring sits 4.7mm high on the finger.
Weighs 1.52 grams

Condition:
The setting is in outstanding condition with no signs of repair or resize. It has been professionally polished and is ready for immediate wear. The agate has a small fissure on one side, visible under magnification. It was there when I purchased the ring, and has not altered in the six years she has been keeping me company.
