Sweet Gallantry : Antique Bloodstone Signet Ring in 15ct Gold

♥Sold♥

A most elegant and easy to wear antique ring with design elements from the Art Nouveau movement and the Edwardian Era, placing it firmly circa 1900. The deep green oval jasper plaque is flecked with small red spots of hematite, reminiscent of a ladybug, and the most recognisable form of the gemstone we call ‘bloodstone’, also known as heliotrope. Bloodstone was the traditional birthstone for March, and has been believed to offer its wearer magical powers since ancient times. The benefits of this stone include youthfulness, promoting good health, and according to Pliny the Elder, wizards used to use it for invisibility! These days I believe this bloodstone ring will have quite the opposite effect, as is almost certain to be noticed and complimented.

Manufacture:
Modelled in 15ct gold and hallmarked with British marks to the inside of the band, including the makers mark W.R, and the 15ct gold hallmark, and part of the .625 fineness hallmark. Other hallmarks were unfortunately lost during an old resize.

The face of the ring is a navette or ‘boat’ shape, with small accent baubles at the tips. Within the navette an oval plaque of heliotrope or bloodstone is set in a rub-over setting with a closed back. At the shoulders there are very sweet Art Nouveau style trefoil cutouts. The shank tapers from the shoulders.

The face of the ring measures 12.55mm from north to south, and 11.2mm from east to west. It has a very low profile, sitting 2.64mm above the finger.
The heliotrope/bloodstone measures approximately 7.2mm x 8.3mm.
