Ocean Moon : Chalcedony Jellyfish Intaglio Ring in Vintage Wendts of Adelaide Filigree Setting

♥Sold♥

The literal translation of the word jellyfish in Japanese is ocean moon which I think is the most poetic and perfect name for this delicate and fascinating sea creature. It makes my heart glow just thinking about it.

Jellyfish are symbolic of flexibility, adaptability, harmony and intuition. Some jellyfish are thought to be immortal, as they can regenerate to a juvenile form of themselves.

This ring was a collaboration between myself and gem carver Susannah Gai. Susannah kindly used her formidable skills to carve a drawing of mine into a fine chrysoprase cabochon she cut especially to fit the gorgeous vintage filigree mount I had found, made by Wendts, one of Adelaide’s oldest multi-generational jewellery companies. I have a big soft spot for their work, which is now collectable. The loopy golden swirls made me think of the sea and the creatures who live there.

The delicate intaglio carving is not only a stunning one of a kind green jellybean ring, but also makes a fine wax impression.

Manufacture:
A new one-of-a-kind chalcedony jellyfish intaglio carved by master craftsperson Susannah Gai in a vintage mid 20th Century filigree setting by Wendts of Adelaide in 9ct. The carving is delicate yet makes a fine impression in wax.

The intaglio is carved into a slightly domed 14.64mm x 13mm oval cut semi-opaque chrysoprase chalcedony cabochon which shifts between mossy green and apple green hues depending on the light.

The vintage mount is handmade in 9ct gold, hallmarked 9ct Wendts to the inside of the band. The filigree undercarriage is delicately hand pierced with fan shapes and long double claws. The fine and delicate filigree work and integrated double claws suggests the ring is circa 1930s, but this style was popular though to the 1960s so it’s difficult for me to circa date with absolute confidence.

Sits 5.45mm high on the finger.
Weighs 3.18 grams.
