Heirloom Scintilation : 1.7 Carat Old Cut Diamond Cobblestone Ring

♥Sold♥

Dating to the Art Deco period (1920 – 1940) but set with much older Old Mine Cut diamonds, this ring boasts approximately 1.7 carats of old world glitter magic. The diamonds were all cut by hand before the invention of electricity, and as you might imagine they are delightfully wonky and full of personality.
Devotees to the 4 C’s of diamond grading need not read further, this ring is not for you.

Handmade in 18ct yellow gold with a silver and palladium top plate and gallery, the diamonds are a mix of sizes pave set across the face of the ring to create a ‘cobblestone’ effect. This style of setting was first seen in the Georgian Era, but had a revival during the Art Deco period.

This ring has amazing finger coverage, and sparkles best in low lighting situations. It’s been absolutely splendid company through dark winter days, and I’m listing it now before I become much too fond of it. I very rarely find rings like this – full of delightful old timey sparkle, but in a setting that will stand up to everyday wear.

Manufacture:
The band and undercarriage of the ring are modelled in 18ct yellow gold, the top plate and gallery are made in an alloy of silver and palladium. This clever concoction adds strength and durability to the silver, and prevents it from tarnishing or requiring rhodium plating. Hallmarked 18ct to the inside of the band, the metals have been verified by XRF test.

(The styling is very much early Art Deco circa 1920, but the use of palladium suggests it may have been made later – platinum was the traditional white metal of the time, but it was annexed in 1939 for military purposes, so jewellers turned to palladium as an alternative.)

The face of the ring is an east-west navette or boat shape, with a low profile and excellent finger coverage.

The 12 old mine cut diamonds are are all varying sizes and colours giving a true cobblestone appearance to the ring, which has a beautiful effect with high crowns and lots of fire. The largest stone is approximately 0.4ct in weight with the smallest approximately 0.1ct.
The diamonds are bead set into the silver/palladium face of the ring, with rub-over settings at the perimeter of the ring. The face of the ring measures 20mm x 8.75mm.
The gallery features saw pierced details to allow light to reach all the diamond facets for brilliant scintillation.
