doot da doot da doo : Vintage Round Postal Horn Charm in 9ct Yellow Gold

AU$225Approximately US$148

I thought, at first, that this was a French Horn. My eldest plays French Horn (quite well, actually!) so I thought I was on a winner when I found this three dimensional musical instrument. The roundness of the bell is pleasingly flared, the pipe is swooshy, the neck is slim and the tassels are a cute little touch! Those of you with teenagers will have no trouble imagining the look I was given when I was informed that this instrument is not a French Horn. Mum Fail. It is instead a round postal horn, like they use in fairy tales or historical dramas when messengers arrive at court.

In the 18th and 19th Centuries postal horns were used to announce the arrival of mail coaches, encouraging people to clear the way for the rapid transit of important messages. Today they are a symbol used by many European postal services. Incidentally it’s also the sound I hear in my head when I pick up a much anticipated package from the post office. Fanfare indeed.

There is also a postal horn emoji! đŸ“¯ was added to emoji in 2015.
