Sweet Memories : Antique Amethyst Pansy Pendant/Brooch in Gilt Silver

♥Sold♥

A striking amethyst pendant/brooch made in silver gilt and dating to the Mid-Victorian Era, circa 1860. In the Victorian coded ‘Language of Flowers’ the pansy signified ‘thoughts’. Items depicting this flower (as well as the delicate flowers themselves) were gifted as a love token between friends, family and lovers. Pansy jewels are uncommon, and favourites among collectors – perhaps because they are so charmingly cheerful.

Manufacture:
Handmade in silver that has been gilded, with the exception of the bail which is 9ct gold. There are no hallmarks present, the metal content has been verified by XRF test.

The petals of the pansy are formed by five fine natural amethyst gemstones of marvellous clarity and saturation. The amethysts have been verified as natural by an independent gemologist.
Each amethyst is held in a multi-pronged setting, the arrangement embellished with a highly detailed central silver gilt flower with a natural pearl at the centre. Little leaves can be found between each petal, with the perimeter framed with a twisted rope border.

This large piece can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch. A large loop at the top of the jewel can be used to hang from a chain, or the original tube hinge and c-clasp brooch fittings on the reverse are present and functional.

The pansy measures 33.64mm (not including the bail) x 24.65mm x 6.77mm (not including the brooch fittings).
Weighs 6.46 grams.

Condition:
Excellent. Ready for immediate wear.

** please note this listing is for the pansy pendant/brooch only – the chain is for styling purposes only and not included in the sale.
