Close to the Heart : Georgian Turquoise and Pearl Locket Pendant / Brooch

AU$1,200Approximately US$788

Circa 1820, dating to the late Georgian Era, this adorable locket pre-dates the invention of photography and would have once held a tiny miniature painting or perhaps a lock of hair. The triple halo of alternating turquoise and pearls around the locket is a sure sign that his was a sentimental jewel, made to keep thoughts of a loved one close to the heart. The turquoise blue is synonymous with forget-me-not flowers for remembrance, and the pearls are symbolic of purity and innocence. It was most likely a gift given between lovers, friends or family members.

This piece can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch, the simple bail tucks neatly behind when worn as a brooch, and the pin and clasp do not impede its wear as a pendant.

The locket section is double sided and opens from the reverse with a hinge. The glass on both sides is lensed and magnifies the contents slightly. it is ideal for displaying a small photo, a pressed flower, a snip of lace, a butterfly wing or whatever little token you’d like to keep close. There may be enough room inside for some small jewels to tumble around in.
