Sacred Bamboo : Vintage Textured Bamboo Bangle by Hurst & Sons of New Zealand

♥Sold♥

A vintage 9ct yellow gold bamboo bangle, made by New Zealand jewellers Hurst & Sons of Auckland, New Zealand.

Bamboo is a recurring motif in jewellery, representing graceful resilience. Throughout Asia bamboo is seen as a miraculous plant – it is used for everything from building shelters, for hunting implements, and as a food source. Bamboo is known for its remarkable strength, for its flexibility and resilience. Because bamboo grows so rapidly it is associated with fertility, long life and even immortality.

Each era seems to have their own stylistic interpretation of this important plant; bamboo bangles in particular were popular in the late 19th Century and throughout the 20th Century. This example has wonderful textured detailing that catches the light in a unique way, and is most reminiscent of the bamboo style popular in the 1970s. It is wide enough to be worn on it’s own as a signature piece, but teams well with other bangle, bracelets and watches to make a unique stack.
