Leaf & Bud : Australian “High Colonial Era” Vine Leaf Earrings in 18ct Gold

AU$1,200Approximately US$788

These leafy earrings, made around 1860 in the early decades of colonial Australia, in the time of the gold rushes that brought scores of people from all over the world to Australia seeking their fortune. They are formed from alluvial gold and were fashioned by an early immigrant jeweller in the shape of grape leaves, with twirly vine tendrils and a bright gemstone grape on each leaf.

Many of the Europeans who settled in South Australia in the 1800s planted our now famous wine regions with vineyards 🍇 and a lot of High Colonial jewellery reflects their interests in the flora and fauna of their new homeland, or in this case their hopes for the future in this new world.

Manufacture:
Handmade in 18ct alluvial gold, fashioned in the shape of grape leaves, with vine tendrils and a bezel set old cut paste grape (imitation diamond) on each leaf. The surface of each leaf is covered in delicate details and texture.

No hallmarks are present, which is to be expected in early Australian jewellery. They have been XRF tested as 18ct gold.

The earrings hang from long shepherds hooks, which are quite likely the original fittings.

The earrings have a total drop of 30mm.
They are 14mm wide and 6mm deep.
Weighs 3.15 grams (pair)

You can see a short video on my Instagram account @secret_histories or online here.

Condition:
Signs of careful repair is evident on the reverse of each earring. Both have had their tips reinforced and on one earring a small hole has been expertly patched. These repairs are in keeping with their age and use and cannot be seen when worn.

Ready for careful everyday wear.
