Imperial Princess : Antique Sapphire and White Enamel Earrings with Rose Cut Diamonds in 18ct Gold

AU$3,500Approximately US$2,298

Converted from a pair of exquisite antique cufflinks circa 1900, with a distinctly Imperial Russian flavour, I was eager to transform these incredible works of art into something every bit as precious, but much more wearable.

With the help of a master jeweller, the original cufflink plates were set into handmade 18ct bezels and gently eased into their new frames with a rub over setting. The 18ct hooks are handmade especially for these earrings. The result is a pair of luxurious old world earrings in incredible condition that hang perfectly. The gentle movement of the wearer sends the rose cut diamonds twinkling, and the deep blue sapphires glow as if lit from within.

It would be a rare one amongst us that would be able to discern that these earrings had not always been exactly as they are, nestled into the jewellery box of an Imperial Russian princess. They would make ideal bridal earrings, but will team up just as well with a luscious gown as with a crisp white shirt and jeans.

Manufacture:
Handmade in 18ct gold throughout, the original cufflink plates are oval shaped and set with natural Ceylon type blue sapphire cabochons measuring 5.25 x 3.67mm. The sapphires are surrounded by a halo of .5 mm double rose cut diamonds with larger 1.45mm double rose cuts at the top and bottom. Each diamond is grain set with open backs to allow the maximum amount of light to make them sparkle. The remaining surface of the plate is covered in opaque white enamel. The reverse of the earring is finished with bloomed gold – antique gold finish that gives a soft texture to the piece.

All gemstones have been verified as natural by an independent gemologist.

Antique 18 hallmarks are found on the reverse of each earring.
The style of these hallmarks indicates they were likely made in one of the British colonies. If they were of Russian manufacture they would have a very different hallmark employing the zolotnik system. Curious, isn’t it!

The earrings have a drop of 31mm
The plates measure 18mm x 12.86 x 4.62mm.
Weighs 7.87 grams (pair)

Condition:
Outstanding. Some tiny fleabites to the edges of the white enamel, visible under magnification, are the only imperfections in these otherwise flawless antique earrings.
