Hand in Hand : Georgian Era Silver “Fede” Ring, circa 1780

♥Sold♥

This darling silver ring is an antique “fede” ring, shortened from the Italian “mani in fede” which translates to ‘hands clasped in faith’. Fede rings have been used since Ancient Roman times to commemorate unions – in love or in friendship. A vow made solid. A bond unbroken. A promise to always be steadfast and true, united as one. It is a beautiful thought, isn’t it? Togetherness.

Fede rings were popular betrothal rings in the Renaissance and Middle Ages. This example is much later – it dates to the late 1700s, and was most likely made in the United Kingdom – the big open roses at the sleeves are a design motif I have seen frequently in English jewels from this period. It’s in remarkably good condition and you could feel confident wearing it without risk of damage.
