Berry Picking : Edwardian Era ‘Toi Et Moi’ Ring with Pink Garnet Topped Doublets in 9ct Rose Gold

♥Sold♥

Dating to the Edwardian Era, Circa 1910 and made in the ultra romantic style called  Toi et Moi – French for ‘You & Me’. This style of ring is often given as an engagement or anniversary ring; the most famous example was the ring given by Napoleon to his Josephine on their engagement. The two large stones are representative of the two individuals joined in union. Josephine’s ring held a pear shaped diamond and sapphire, but in this example two hot pink garnet topped doublets represent our lovers. I imagine this ring was probably originally given as an anniversary or a promise ring, the two hot pink stones are most unusual choices for a toi et moi, but that big pop of pink definitely makes you think of love!

Every time I write about jewels that were traditional gifts from men to women I’m so glad we don’t wait for our significant others to buy us jewels any more! In the past women couldn’t have assets or bank accounts, so it historically makes sense, but thank heavens those days are behind (for most of) us now.

This styling of this ring sits right on the cusp of Edwardian-meets-Art-Deco. a great blend of the two eras. This piece is almost certainly Australian in origin – we made extensive use of garnet topped doublets to extend the very limited range of gemstones that were mined here or made it to our shores in the days when everything and everyone travelled by sea. Garnet topped doublets are quite ingenious in that they have the hard wearing top of a natural gem, which resists chips and abrasion, but the colour comes from the paste section beneath. The doublets in this ring are a peachy pink – like a saturated tourmaline.

Manufacture:
Modelled in 9ct rose gold, the two gemstones are set in four double claw settings with a simple collet beneath. The tapered shoulders have a double groove design leading to a classic half-round band. A 9ct hallmark can be found inside the band.

The two pink gemstones are garnet topped doublets imitating pink tourmaline. They are deeply saturated in colour and in excellent condition. Each stone has a diameter of approximately 6.65mm.

The face of the ring measures 13.5mm x 6.76mm. Sits 4.4mm high on the finger.
Weighs 2.7 grams.

Size:
Q or 8.5
somewhat resizable. We do offer a resizing service starting at $45 Australian dollars. Please get in touch for a quote.

Condition:
In very good antique condition. This ring has been resized in the past – the sizing bar is faintly visible from the inside, but would disappear if polished. As it is a cosmetic issue only, and not visible when worn I’ve elected to preserve the antique patina. It can be polished if desired.
Ready for immediate and everyday wear.
