Circa 1900 and likely Australian in origin, this heart shaped pendant is modelled in solid 9ct rose gold in the medieval-influenced style favoured by practitioners of the Arts & Crafts movement.
The Arts & Crafts movement developed as a reaction against mass produced items in the decorative arts, practitioners included notable figures such as William Morris and John Ruskin. They advocated for a return to handmade items designed and constructed by the same hand. Pieces from The Arts & Crafts movement are often confused for its better known sibling Art Nouveau, which was developing as an artistic style at the same time. Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau share a tendency towards flowing lines and organic forms, but the Arts & Crafts movement delighted in showing the makers hand and are often set with semi precious or unusual gemstones – piece were intended to look like they had been crafted by human hands rather than made by machine.
This handmade pendant has an overall heart shape, decorated with openwork, engraving and a bezel set oval cut pink paste stone imitating ruby.
Manufacture:
Handmade in 9ct rose gold, there are no hallmarks on the piece, which suggests it is Australian in origin. It has been XRF tested as 9ct rose gold. The gold pendant is handmade in the Arts & Crafts style, and features saw pierced openwork and engraving.
The central deep pink stone is pink paste imitating ruby. It is oval cut and sits in a bezel setting with milgrain detail around the perimeter.
The pendant measures 25.5mm (not including the bail) x 20mm x 3.5mm.
Weighs 3.91 grams.

Very good. The pink paste has some abrasions to the table facets visible under magnification. Ready for immediate and everyday wear.
