Tiny Grimace : Wee “Lava” Cameo Charm Circa 1850

♥Sold♥

This strange little cameo was a tiny stick pin. I’ve had him transformed into a strange tiny charm. Originally a souvenir from some gent’s Grand Tour adventure around 1850. This wee chap is carved from “lava” from Mt. Vesuvius near Pompeii. It’s not really lava, it’s coloured limestone, but you know how souvenir shops like to bend the truth for a good story.

Anyway, I think he’s fantastic. My penchant for the strange and unusual is fulfilled! I had hoped to create a whole charm bracelet of these guys in different colours, but I think that project may be out of reach for the time being, so I’ve decided to make him available now as I’d much rather he was in league with you, stirring up mischief, instead of stuck in a box waiting for my stars to align.

You can see a short video of this charm on my Instagram account @secret_histories, or online here.

Manufacture:
Circa 1850, hand carved from “lava” found at Pompeii. The setting is an antique low carat gold alloy of gold and silver, the new loop and jump ring are 9ct gold.

Measures a tiny 9.6mm (not including the loop or bail) x 8.7mm x 6.36mm.
Weighs 0.76 grams.

Condition:
There is some considerable softening of the features of the cameo, thanks to 150 years of jaunting about, but I feel it adds to his otherworldly countenance. You can see where the pin was attached at the back, but it has been filed silky smooth, you won’t notice it when it’s being worn.
Ready for immediate wear, but please do keep in mind that lava cameos are soft stones and won’t handle rough treatment.
