You & Me : Art Deco ‘Toi et Moi’ Diamond Ring in 18ct and Platinum

Sold

An incredibly sweet and sparkly Toi et Moi ring made during the Art Deco period, circa 1925-1935. Toi et Moi is French for ‘You & Me’ – this style of ring is often given as an engagement or anniversary ring; the most famous example was the ring given by Napoleon to his Josephine. The two large stones are representative of the individuals joined in union. Josephine’s ring held a pear shaped diamond and sapphire, but in this example two bright early brilliant cut diamonds represent our lovers in true Art Deco style. Not only is this ring oozing with romance, it is sensibly and sturdily made and would be suitable for a modern bride’s engagement ring.

Manufacture:
Two bright early brilliant cut diamonds with a combined carat weight of 25 points are grain set into square bezels with milgrain edging. The diamonds have been graded in their settings as H-I in colour and Si1 clarity. An additional twelve single cut diamonds are set into the stepped shoulders, which have been graded as H-I in colour and Si-P1 clarity. They have an estimated combined weight of 2 points.

The ring is modelled in 18ct yellow gold with a platinum top. The shoulders and gallery both have open scrollwork to allow light to reach the underside of the diamonds for maximum sparkle. The face of the ring measures 16.2mm  4.1mm including the shoulders. The 18ct  yellow gold shank is 1.29mm wide and 1.15mm thick. It has a low profile, sitting 3.3mm high on the finger.

It is hallmarked W.18.D and the gold content has been verified by XRF test. I believe the W.18.D. mark is the hallmark for Australian jewellers Dunklings of Melbourne, established 1898. Weighs 2.17 grams.

Size L or 5.75 on the mandrel, but due to its oval shape and slim band it fits like a size L 1/4 or 6.
Could be resized smaller, but not any larger due to the stepped shoulders.

Valued by an accredited and independent gemologist in January 2020 as having an insurance replacement value of AUD$2145.

Condition:
In good vintage condition, suitable for another lifetime of love. Gentle wear is evident to the gallery of the ring where it has been worn with other rings. This ring makes an outstanding stacker and most likely spent its life between a wedding and eternity ring, similar to how I have styled it in the photographs.
