What Colour Is Love? : Victorian Malachite Heart Fob Pendant

♥Sold♥

The heart shape has been slowly evolving through the eras, but found its present form with the cleft top and straight pointy end during the Victorian era, when the heart truly came into its own as a popular token of love and friendship. (Prior to this hearts were often smooth at the top and had a point that curved at the bottom).

Just as the shape has changed so too has the colour of love – in the western world we associate pink and red as the colours of love and passion, but I have read that in old Hindu texts the colour green represents the heart or the heart chakra. This sweet little talisman might be the perfect antidote to help strengthen or heal a heart.

This luxuriously smooth pendant is made of solid malachite and dates from the mid Victorian Era, circa 1860. I believe it was quite likely originally worn as a watch fob. Malachite was mined from an area near Burra in South Australia, not too far from Adelaide, so it is quite possible that this token hasn’t strayed far from its origins.

The pendant is truly 3-dimensional, lovely and plump on both sides. You can follow the ribbons of green around and around the carved stone. It is cool to touch and marvellously soothing. The malachite heart is framed in a rope border of 9ct gold, and pierced all the way through with golden heart.

Manufacture:
The handmade setting is solid 9ct rosey old gold. It has no hallmarks but has been verified by XRF test. The heart shaped stone was likewise carved by hand. It has had a gentle professional polish to bring back the lustre of the stone.

This juicy heart measures 24.6mm tall (not including the large bail loop), 18.42mm wide and 11.2mm thick. Weighs 7.03 grams.

Condition:
In excellent antique condition with no faults to note.

**Please note this listing is for the pendant only. If you are looking for a chain to match please get in touch, we would be happy to source something for you.
