Triple Treat : Antique Triple Row Ring with Old Cut Diamonds and Orange Garnets in 15ct

Sold

An unusual and captivating antique row ring featuring three rows of old cut gemstones. This 15ct ring was made in Australia in the late 1800’s. The low profile and hard wearing gemstones make this an ideal ring for everyday wear.

Manufacture:
Five deep orange and adamantine garnets of approximately 2.5mm diameter each span the centre of the face of the ring, with rows of four old cut diamonds of a similar size on each side. The natural garnets are a deep orange hue – my gemologist believes they might be of the hessionite or spessartite varieties, but it is difficult to pinpoint which type of garnet they are due to their size and setting. The total garnet carat weight is over 1/3 carat, and the total diamond carat weight is approximately .6 carats. The stones are all original to the ring and are securely set.

The face of the ring measures 14.2mm x 8.12mm and the ring sits 4mm high on the finger. It weighs 4.7 grams.

The ring is modelled in 15ct gold and hallmarked to the inside of the band 15ct and “Real Stones”, an amusing hallmark I have seen on several early Australian pieces, but have not been able to pinpoint the maker as yet. Australian jewellers went to great lengths to prove the worthiness of their jewels, which were sometimes unfavourably compared to English made jewellery. These comparisons were largely unfounded, but the convict roots of the colonies did colour the general perception of Australians for quite some time – jewellers especially went the extra mile to prove their honesty and accountability – for example Melbourne jewellery firm Macrow added the word GUARANTEED after the carat gold stamp to reassure their customers that the quality of their goods was exactly as stated.
