Sweet Clover : Reversible Victorian Sterling Book Chain Necklace with Extension

Sold

A truly delightful Victorian book chain necklace circa 1880s with clover or trefoil engraving on one side. It can be worn with the engraving facing out, or reversed for a chic and contemporary look.

Clover or trefoil has several meanings in the coded language of flowers. It can mean “think of me” or domestic virtue. The shamrock is also the emblem of Ireland – the trilogy being important to the ancient Celtic druids and also the symbol of St. Patrick.

Manufacture:
The necklace measures 45cm (17.75″) long, with an additional removable 3.5cm (1.4″) extension that would have originally held a silver locket. I have styled it with one of my favourite brooches as a pendant, but the possibilities are endless. (Please note the moon brooch is not included.)
The links are 10.3mm wide and 3.4mm deep.
The necklace weighs 27.6 grams

The metal is not hallmarked, but xrf tests as sterling silver.

Condition:
In outstanding antique condition, ready for immediate and everyday wear. The necklace has been professionally hand polished to bring out its shine while retaining its aged patina.
