A particularly striking Victorian Era Sterling silver bookchain collar and locket, circa 1880. The collar length chain features star motif on the diamond shaped links, with large and small ball terminals along the perimeter of the chain. The large locket has room for two images inside. It has been hand engraved with foliate flourishes on the front, but is unengraved on the back. Both sides have an embossed rayed border around the perimeter of the locket.
The chain is 43cm long. It can be worn with or without the locket for two very different but equally chic looks. It is xxmm wide and weighs 38.1grams. The bolt ring is soldered on to the large loop on one side. It works well and fastens securely, but the spring that pushes the clasp closed has softened.
The locket measures 61mm from the top of the bail to the bottom. It is 35.4mm wide and 8.3mm deep. There is room for two xmm x xmm photographs inside. It closes securely.
The locket weighs 17.2 grams.
Neither of the pieces are hallmarked, but the metal content has been verified as Sterling silver by XRF test.
