Ruby Starburst : Antique Australian Star Pendant/Brooch with Seed Pearls by Johnson and Simonsen

♥Sold♥

A classic early Australian piece by Johnson and Simonsen of Melbourne. circa 1900. This starburst can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch. It was cleverly designed so that the pin does not interfere when the piece is worn as a pendant, the pendant bail tucks away neatly when worn as a brooch.

Manufacture:
Made in 9ct gold throughout and hallmarked to the reverse with the hallmarking system developed by the Manufacturing Jewellers Association of Victoria, including the compass hallmark used by Johnson and Simonsen.

The starburst is set with natural seed pearls and garnet topped doublets imitating rubies. The pearls are in beautiful condition with a full coat of nacre, they are individially bead or collet set and all appear to be original to the piece.
Garnet topped doublets are commonly found in jewels from this Era, particularly in Australian made jewellery. They combine the hardwearing properties of garnets but can be made in any colour under the sun. These doublets imitate the deep pink glow of natural rubies.

The starburst measures 33.5mm in diameter, not including the bail. It has a depth of 12.7mm.
The pendant has a drop of 40mm.
Weighs 4.3 grams.

Condition:
In very good antique condition with signs of wear commensurate with age. The pin clasp has been repaired or replaced at some point in the past but is in excellent working condition, the 9ct gold pin snaps into it securely.
Ready for immediate wear.
