Peacock : Rectangular Australian Crystal Opal Cabochon Set in 18ct Gold

A contemporary ring in weighty 18ct yellow gold, set with a solid hunk of Australian Crystal Opal in 18ct  buttery gold. I’m not usually drawn to contemporary pieces, but this ring is one of those rare exceptions that has the special magic I look for. The opal has a full range of rainbow colours that change and shift in the light. Its strikingly saturated colours include teals, pink, green and orange. It has been unusually cut en cabochon in a rectangle.

I love the golden stepped shoulders, so contemporary yet timeless. The ring has been made with care and attention to detail – the styling is thoughtful and unique. An excellent every day or right hand ring, equally suitable for a gentleman or a lady – or anyone who might not identify with either gender.

Manufacture:
Cast in one piece in 18ct yellow gold, hallmarked 750 to the inside of the band.
The opal measures approximately 5.1mm x 8.6mm x 2.5mm and is set into the face of the ring, sitting proudly outside of the golden setting. It weighs a hefty 5.9 grams. There is a tiny spec of what looks to be ironstone on one corner, which would indicate that the ring is from Queensland. A true opal aficionado will recognise this as a feature and not a flaw.

The face of the ring measures 6.28 x 12mm. The shoulders are 5.9mm tapering to 2.7mm at the back of the band. The band is 1.05mm thick at the thinnest point.
Sits 4.6mm high on the finger.

Condition:
In as-new condition. There are no chips or scratches to the opal. The ring looks like it has never been worn.
