Luxe Links : Victorian Double Albert Watch Chain with Graduating Links

AU$2,350.00

Approximately: US$1,645.00

A luxurious, slinky and weighty solid 9ct rosey gold double Albert chain dating to the late 1800’s. Originally used by a gentleman to hang his pocketwatch and other necessities, it has been co-opted as an essential item of every vintage jewellery lovers ensemble. Timeless and classic, functional and beautiful, perfect worn alone or as part of your neckmess.

Each of the lengths of chain on either side of the t-bar gently graduates in both the size of the links and the thickness of the gold – the smallest link being 5mm wide made from 1.2mm gauge wire, to the widest link of 7mm made from 2mm gauge wire, and back down again. The transition is smooth and skillfully done. The widest parts of the chain like to snuggle into your collarbones, weighting it perfectly.

Each handmade link has been hallmarked, including the t-bar, swivel dog clip and spring clip, which also bear matching makers mark J.M. The The T bar swivels in its mount – another lovely detail on a finely made piece of functional jewellery, and very tactile for restless fingers to play with. Once upon a time a medal would have hung from the short length of chain next to the t bar, but it now waits for your personalisation with a charm or fob.

The chain is in outstanding condition with very little sign of wear. The only item to note is that the spring clip has worn where the dog clip rests against it when closed. This does not effect the functionality or durability of the piece, but is mentioned here for transparency. (It could be replaced without any trouble if desired.) The swivel on the dog clip is also a little stiff – this could be adjusted by your jeweller.

A short video can be seen on my Instagram account @secret_histories, or online here.

The chain weighs 40 grams, is 44.5cm / 17.5″ long.
Ideal in every respect, a high quality piece of jewellery made to endure.
