Old Cut Elegance : Victorian Era Old Cut Diamond Navette Ring

♥Sold♥

A dazzling beauty, designed to elongate the fingers and sparkle magnificently over candle lit dinners. This style of ring was popular in the late Victorian through Edwardian Eras. It was intended as a statement ring for evening soirees, but is currently a popular choice for modern brides looking for an alternative engagement ring.

Navette means “little boat”. The shape is thought to be particularly elegant as it elongates the fingers. One can quite see why it was popular for so long, and why it is having a renaissance. This particular navette would be a good choice for an everyday ring – it is not overlarge and the low profile makes it practical to wear. The only possible downside is that you may be occasionally blinded by the sparkle.

Manufacture:
This diamond navette ring is made in 18ct yellow gold with a platinum top. The face of the ring is pave set with old cut diamonds. The diamonds have been certified as natural by an independent gemologist, who has graded the mixed old cut stones to have a colour range from G-I, and a spectrum of clarity from VS-P1. There are no inclusions visible to the naked eye. The centre is a transitional cut of about 10 points. The combined carat weight of the diamonds is approximately 45 points – almost 1/2 carat.

The ring is handmade in 18ct yellow gold with a decorative hand pierced gallery which allows light to reach every surface of the diamonds for maximum sparkle. The pinched shoulders lead to a half-round band. The inside of the band is hallmarked 18c and Plat for 18ct and Platinum. The shape of the hallmarks is distinctive and similar to those I have seen on pieces with Australian Makers marks. I expect that this piece was made in Australia around the turn of the 20th Century.

The face of the ring measures 14.6mm x 7.3mm. Sits 3.73mm high on the finger.
Weighs 2.3 grams.

Condition:
In lovely antique condition with wear commensurate with age. There are chips to two of the diamonds, only visible under magnification. The ring has had its claws re-tipped at some point quite recently (although not by me), all diamonds are secure in their settings. It is ready for immediate and everyday wear.
