Nuts About You : Vintage Sterling Marcasite Acorn Brooch

Sold

Please forgive the silly title – I couldn’t help myself.

Acorns are an ancient symbol of strength, perseverance, independence and potential. The perfect motif for the self-possessed or for those looking to borrow a little strength. I don’t often see two acorns represented in the same piece which suggests a long lived relationship – indeed in French folklore the celebration of 80 years of marriage is known as the Wedding of Oak.

This early Art Deco piece is one of the finest examples of marcasite jewellery I have come across. It is three-dimensional in appearance, handmade with care and great attention to detail. Made in the Art Nouveau style with flowing lines, it dates to a little later as evidenced by the pin and rollover catch.

Manufacture:
This unusual handmade piece features two acorns on the branch with swirling tendrils surrounding, all encrusted with bead set marcasite (pyrite) stones of varying sizes, and gorgeous milgrain detail. Stamped  Sterling to the reverse of one of the acorn seeds.

The brooch measures 55mm x 16mm and is 4.55mm deep, not including the pin. Weighs 7.7 grams.

Condition:
In wonderful original condition, ready for immediate and everyday wear. The pin has been gently hand polished to preserve its patina, but could be polished to a high shine by your local jeweller.
