Mystic Orb : 1940’s White Opal Ring with Diamond Shoulders

♥Sold♥

A swirl of transforming, living colour is the best way I can think to describe the mesmerising solid Australian white opal cabochon at the heart of this beautiful mid-century ring. It appears to be alive with a liquid core that changes colour with every move of the hand. The predominant colours are  orange and green with hints of red and holographic blue, which is a rare and desirable colour spectrum in opals. My photographs are woefully inadequate at capturing the magic inside this stone.

A true 1940’s era statement ring in the late Art Deco style. The large central cabochon is flanked by pointed palladium shoulders with milgrain edging, and a single cut diamond nestled into the white metal to add a little bit of twinkle to the mixture. The majority of the ring is modelled in 14ct yellow gold. 4 large prongs hold the opal firmly in place without covering the stone. The band features a beautiful kinfe-edge that travels all the way around the band from shoulder to shoulder.

The distinctive rose hallmark inside the band is of American jewellery firm Untermeyer Robbins & Co. from New York City who traded from 1902 – 1950. The ring is marked 14k, this has been verified by XRF test as has the palladium content of the white metal shoulders.

The opal measures 12mm north-south and 10.2mm east-west – an estimated 3 carats of solid Australian white opal of exceptional quality. The single cut diamonds are bright white and clear, measuring 1.5mm diameter each for a total of 0.03 carats.
The ring sits 6.6mm high on the finger.
