Mayor of Trouble Town : Victorian Era Sterling Silver Collar and Locket

Sold

An exquisite and powerful Victorian Era collar necklace and matching locket in sterling silver, circa 1880. Silver lockets with matching chains were the height of fashion around the Western world during the 1880’s and 1890’s. I have photographed this piece on an image from Anne Schofield’s excellent book Australian Jewellery – this photograph dates to 1881, and if you look carefully you will see that many of the ladies in this photograph are wearing similar lockets and chains over their dresses.

These pieces have had a recent revival in popularity, possibly because they look most contemporary and edgy when worn with modern wardrobe staples. It makes a statement whether worn in a formal setting with a business shirt is super chic and cool, or as part of your weekend casual – a chunky silver collar with a black tank top and jeans is edgy and sexy.

The collar is made to mould to the contours of your neck and drape over your collarbones. The silver locket holds two photographs inside, it is patterned on the front and smooth on the reverse. The locket can be removed and the collar worn on its own for a different, yet still contemporary and edgy look.

Manufacture:
The necklace and locket are both unmarked but have been XRF tested as sterling silver. The locket has brand new locket glass inside and is ready to hold your photographs or keepsakes.

The collar is 42.5cm long, including the bolt ring. It is 19.76mm wide and 4.07mm thick. It weighs 67.2 grams.

The locket  is 62.5mm from the top of the bail to the bottom of the locket, it is 36.37mm wide and 12.24mm thick. It weighs 27.2 grams. The area for photographs inside the locket is approximately 39mm x 29mm. The hinge is in perfect working condition and the locket opens smoothly and closes securely. The locket is patterned to the front and smooth on the reverse.

Condition:
In excellent working condition, ready for immediate wear. The bolt ring has excellent spring and snaps closed securely. There are a few minor dings to the reverse of the locket (please see photos) but these are not visible when worn. It would be possible to have a competent silversmith remove these marks if desired.
