Unicorn : Solid Australian Crystal Opal Teardrop with a Rainbow of Colour in 9ct

♥Sold♥

I fell hopelessly in love with this opal the moment I saw it. Who amongst us opal lovers can resist a juicy pear with a complete spectrum of rainbow colours swirling about inside? Not I! The original setting had been too well loved and needed an overhaul, but the stone itself was perfect (a small miracle). In the end the sparkles won me over and I resolved to breathe new life into the dear old thing and make her ready for another lifetime of rainbow magic.

There aren’t many jewellers who are confident working with opals as they are soft stones to work with, but fortunately for me there are several opal setters in Adelaide (due to our proximity to the opal mines) who will set an opal properly (often they are just glued in!). I was able to save the beautiful vintage knife-edge band, which dates to the early 1900’s and had a brand new bezel setting made to keep the opal safe from knocks and bumps, while showing off its splendid colour. To me this opal looks like material from Cober Peady with lots of blues and greens, swirls of pink and orange. It explodes into a firework of rainbow colours in the sunshine, really incredible.

The solid Australian crystal opal displays a full spectrum of rolling colours. The ring is in outstanding condition.

The opal has an approximate weight of 1.3 carats, measured in the setting. The face of the ring measures 14.7mm north-south and 9.6mm east-west. he band is 1mm wide at the shoulders, broadening to 1.6mm at the back. The band is 1mm thick.

The early Australian 9ct hallmark inside the band is so worn as to be practically invisible. The ring has been XRF (x-ray) tested to verify gold content. Weighs 2.9 grams
