Lucky Bean : Antique Silver and Blue Guilloché Enamel Bean Charm

♥Sold♥

An antique silver bean with royal blue guilloché enamel.
These little lucky bean charms have become enormously popular and consequently very hard to find. The delightful Sandy of Sandy’s Vintage Charms has written an outstanding article on the origin of the lucky bean charm. In it she describes how drift seeds (she calls them ‘sea beans’) would wash up on the beaches of Europe. These were seeds from foreign lands that had floated on ocean currents over thousands of kilometers to wash up on the beach. The beans were still able to germinate, which people recognised was very lucky after such a long time at sea, and thus they became a good luck talisman. I recommend you read Sandy’s article, it’s full of lovely ideas about this sweet and adventurous little bean.

They may also be a reference to the fairy tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, although I wouldn’t recommend planting this bean.

Manufacture:
Made of European 900 silver and covered in rich royal blue enamel with guilloché patterning visible underneath the translucent enamel. The bean is not hallmarked but has been XRF tested to verify the metal content.

The charm measures 20.8mm (not including the jump ring) x 9.62mm x 4.92mm and weighs 1.7 grams.

Condition:
In excellent antique condition. The enamel is free from chips, there are some minor scratches as you would expect from any antique item. The jump ring is not soldered closed.
