It’s A Cinch : Victorian Era 18ct Buckle Ring Hallmarked 1864

♥Sold♥

A most remarkable, romantic and substantial buckle ring, with full English hallmarks dating it to Birmingham 1864. That’s 157 years ago! This is without a doubt one of the finest and most practical antique rings I have come across. Often antique rings must be worn with care, but this old love will be happy on your dominant hand, doing the dishes or weeding in the garden.

Buckles in Victorian jewellery are a motif for eternity, fidelity/loyalty, strength and protection. The symbol curves around and threads back into itself, creating an eternal loop.

In 1864 buckle rings were very fashionable choices as wedding rings. If a bride had been gifted an antique engagement ring that didn’t quite fit, she might use a buckle ring as a “keeper” ring, preventing the engagement ring from slipping and keeping with the fashion of the day. The motif gained popularity from 1850s that continued through to the 1920s. While buckle rings are not difficult to find, examples of this age, carat and quality are not easy to come by.
