Highland Hues : Victorian Era Scottish “Pebble” Earrings

♥SOLD♥

Gorgeous Scottish “pebble” agate, jasper and sterling silver drop earrings from the Victorian Era, circa 1860 – 1880 in completely original condition.

Queen Victoria fell head over heels for Scotland following her first visit in 1842, so much so that she and Albert purchased land and built their own castle – Balmoral Castle – which was completed in 1856. The Royal Couple’s enchantment with Scotland flowed into the fashion of the times, and jewellery featuring classic Scottish motifs and hardstones became very popular. There is an enormous variety amongst what is referred to as “Scottish pebble” jewellery from the Victorian era. The pieces are often one-of-a-kind, taking advantage of the individual colours and characteristics of the stones – usually agate – used in the piece. These earrings are very autumnal in tone with slices of mustard yellow and brick red hardstone set into sterling silver, and delicately decorated with engraved patterns all over the front.

The earrings are hollow in construction but well made and durable. This gives them a pleasing weight – a good amount of swing, but not at all heavy on the ears. They are delightfully easy to wear. The silver ball hanging at the centre has a little wobble all of it’s own.

These lovely earrings  have been part of my personal collection for years and are certain to win you as many compliments as they have done me. They have been professionally cleaned and polished and are ready for everyday wear.
