Heart Aflame : Etruscan Revival Pear Cut Garnet Cabochon Ring

AU$1,775Approximately US$1,165

An arresting statement ring – this piece is a thoughtful conversion from an enormous Etruscan Revival stick pin, dating to the Victorian Era, circa 1880. The pear cut garnet cabochon, also known as a carbuncle, is surrounded by a high carat gold rope-like border in the Etruscan Revival style. The richness of the gold compliments and enhances the deep red hue of the truly magnificent natural garnet. The gemstone is in a closed setting giving the stone the ability to burst into super saturated, vivid colour as the light reflects off the highly polished gold beneath.
It is a daring and vampy statement ring, a huge drop of delicious glowing red.

The original pin had the stone set with the tip of the pear pointing down, echoing the shape of a Georgian Era heart. You can, of course, wear this ring in either orientation – as a heart or a drop.

Manufacture:
The face of the original component is hand made with a double rope border that frames the extra large natural garnet. The border and face of the ring XRF test as 17ct, with the domed back testing as 9ct gold.

The new band has been handmade to compliment the original component, in sympathy with rings from the period. It is made in 9ct gold for strength and stability.

The garnet has been confirmed by an independent gemologist as a natural garnet.

The pear shaped garnet measures 16.35mm x 11mm x 4mm – approximately 5 carats.
The face of the ring measures 21mm x 15.82mm. Sits 8.14mm high on the finger.
Weighs 5.7 grams

Size P or 7.75
resizable – complimentary resizing is available for this ring. I would advise against making it more than a size or two smaller, but it could be made much larger if desired. This is simply because of the size of the stone, it has huge finger coverage.

Condition:
In excellent antique condition.
There are a few tiny nibbles to the surface of the garnet, only visible under magnification. The domed back has a little dent, which cannot be seen when worn. Ready for immediate wear. As with any closed-back ring I would avoid immersing it in water to prevent build up behind the stone, which may darken the colour over time.
