Green Comet : Edwardian Era Peridot Triple Drop Necklace in Rose Gold

♥Sold♥

A delightfully unusual Edwardian Era necklace circa 1900s featuring fine vivid green peridots in rose gold. Peridot was the favourite stone (and birthstone) of King Edward, there are many fine examples of jewellery from this era which feature the bright grassy green stone, although few with the elegant simplicity of this piece. Celestial jewellery was also very much in vogue during this time – it may be fanciful of me but I do see a resemblance to a shooting comet in this delightful piece.

Peridots originate in one of two places: outer space – arriving on the planet via meteors, or inner space – formed in the earths mantle, coming to the surface on a wave of lava. The Ancient Hawaiians believed that peridots were the tears of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes, fire and lightning.

Manufacture:
There are no hallmarks to the piece, but the metal content has been verified by XRF test – the bezels and rigid knife edge sections are made in 9ct rose gold and the chain in 12ct rose gold. Most likely made in Australia.

The peridots are a mixture of cuts – marquise, pear, round and oval – brought together in harmony in this delicious necklace. Each of the gems is set with four claws in individual solid bezels.

The central marquise peridot is the largest, measuring approximately 5mm x 11.9mm x 3mm
The two round peridots on either side of the marquise are each 5.3mm in diameter.
The left drop holds a pear shaped peridot measuring 6.1mm x 4.4mm.
The central drop has an oval and a pear cut peridot. The oval measures 5.3mm x 3.9mm, the pear 7.3mm x 4.8mm.
The right drop has a pear shaped peridot measuring 6mm x 4.2mm.

The necklace measures 44.5cm / 17.5″ long. It fastens with the original barrel clasp. The drop measures 48mm.
Weighs 5.5 grams

Condition:
In excellent antique condition with signs of wear commensurate with age and gentle use.
