Gigantic : Vintage Smoky Quartz Cocktail Ring in Incredible Handmade Sterling Setting

Sold

A truly enormous 40 carat smoky quartz cocktail ring in an impressive hand pierced silver setting. This ring requires a real commitment to Go Large, because there’s nothing subtle about this statement piece.

Large gemstone cocktail rings were popular from the 1930’s through the 1970’s making it tricky to circa date. It has no hallmarks, so no clues to be found there. Judging by the level of craftsmanship in the completely handmade sterling silver setting and the double claw setting which was particularly popular in the 1930’s I’m making an educated guesstimate that it is circa 1930’s/1940’s.

Manufacture:
The smoky quartz is very pale in hue, absolutely eye clean and beautifully cut in a modified emerald cut. It measures approximately 25.8mm x 18.04mm x 11.7mm. The ring sits 13.75mm high on the finger. It weighs 14.8 grams.

The setting is not hallmarked but has been verified as Sterling Silver by XRF test.

The size is difficult to ascertain as the shank is slightly oval in shape. On the mandrel is is an L or 6, but it flops about inelegantly on my size M/6.5 finger. I would recommend the best fit would be a size O1/2 or 7.5 to prevent the top heavy ring from moving too much on your hand. It is resizable up a few sizes, or down a size using sizing beads.

Condition:
Absolutely pristine. I can find no signs of wear or damage to the setting or the stone. Ready for immediate wear.
