Fool For Love : Antique Citrine Intaglio Wax Seal Fob in 18ct Gold

♥Sold♥

A glorious antique citrine intaglio fob in 18ct yellow, green and rose gold dating to the early 19th Century, circa 1830s. The pale yellow folied citrine has the figure of cupid riding a four legged creature with a bushy tail (possibly a donkey, although I think it looks like a wolf) surrounded by the French words “ces sont mes sujets” which I believe translates to “These are all my subjects”. Cupid was the embodiment of love for the Georgians and Victorians, this saying is usually found with a depiction of Cupid riding a donkey/ass and is reputed to mean “fool for love”.

The thistle emblem in rose and green gold suggests this piece may be Scottish in origin.

Manufacture:
The fob is not hallmarked but has been verified as solid 18ct gold (not plated or rolled gold) by XRF test. It is decorated with small thistles around the bottom border in rose and green gold, and a large floral emblem in green gold leading to the loop at the top.

The citrine has been verified as natural by an independent certified gemologist.

Measures 24mm high x 17mm x 14.65mm.
Weighs 5.2 grams

Condition:
In lovely antique condition. The foling is bright and the three colour gold work is in very good repair with signs of wear commensurate with age and use. There is a small chip to the side of the citrine intaglio above the word “sont”. The chip does not interfere with the surface of the intaglio which makes a fine impression in wax. The chip is only visible with the aid of a loupe or a macro photograph but mentioned here for transparency.
