Fireball : Antique Australian Crystal Opal Ring in 15ct Gold

Sold

Australian Solid Crystal Opal cabochon of approximately 3.15 carats, displaying lively fire and colours predominantly of orange, yellow and green – but you’ll find every hue in the rainbow inside her shifting surface. Held securely in an antique 15ct rose gold setting with absolutely wicked claws.

It’s hard to tell for certain whether this is an Andamooka or Lightning Ridge opal as it has distinctive characteristics of both famous mines. The Edwardian style setting suggests to me that this may be a Lightning Ridge opal as the Andamooka mine was not discovered until the 1930’s – but no matter the origin of this incredible stone it is absolutely top class and fit for a Queen.

It has been a pleasure and a delight to have this ring in my company, it is without a doubt the finest opal I have held. The delicate, slender claws hold the beautiful stone securely without sacrificing any of the glorious pay of colour. It has been suggested to me that they look like tiny fingers caressing the beautiful cabochon.

The opal and setting are in fine antique condition with no faults, chips or crazing, no scratches either. The ring shows no evidence of repairs or resizing. Truly an amazing antique piece in fabulous condition.

It can be really hard to capture the magic of an opal in still photographs, or even on video as the play of colour is an elusive thing. You can see a little video of this ring in action on my instagram account @secret_histories or online here.
