1902 : Edwardian Era Open Photo Locket in 9ct Rose Gold

♥Sold♥

A classic, sleek open photo locket dating to 1902, made in 9ct rose gold with crisp hallmarks for Chester 1902. While many open photo lockets from this era feature scrolls and other embellishments to the border, the unfussy and substantial design of this piece puts the contents as the focus.

Photography is so ubiquitous now – I’m sure you have 1000000000 billion photos of your loved ones in your phone, but in 1902 when this locket was made photographs were still precious and rare for most people. These days it’s fashionable to fill double sided open lockets up with gemstones, which I think is fun. I like to pop pressed flowers from special events in mine, and I’ve seen some with little pieces of tatting or lacework which looks absolutely darling. This one won’t work as a shaker, the new beveled watch acrylic needs to make a good sandwich with the object inside.
What will you keep in there?

Manufacture: Made of solid 9ct rose gold with nice crisp hallmarks for Chester, 1902. The locket has all of it’s original gold fittings, including the golden washer which tightly clasps the loop of gold beneath the threads of the lock-nut loop.

New acrylic watch glass has been fitted on both sides of the locket, which has the practical advantages over glass of being more durable, lighter in weight, shatterproof and scratch resistant.

The locket measures 41mm from top to bottom and 32mm wide, 5.6mm deep. The photo area has a diameter of approximately 30mm
It weighs 8.5 grams

Condition:
In excellent condition with no faults to note. Under magnification you can see the gentle patina acquired over the last 100+ years. This could be polished out to a mirror finish if desired.
