Demeter : Antique Carnelian Intaglio Ring

♥Sold♥

The Ancient Greek goddess Demeter is the goddess of harvest and fertility. She’s the bringer of abundance. That’s her profile carved into this deep maroon slice of carnelian agate, you can identify her by the stalks of wheat in her hair and floating nearby. This extra large carnelian intaglio dates to the Edwardian Era in the very early years of the 20th Century, circa 1910. It is unusual in that the face of the stone is convex, gently curving. Because of this the ring wraps around your finger in the most tasteful and understated way, making it exceedingly comfortable to wear.
The carving is exquisitely done and makes a fine wax impression should you be so inclined.

This ring has led a life. While the intaglio remains blemish-free, there was some mishap with the original band. At some point in the past the band was replaced with a vintage wedding ring. It is exceedingly comfortable to wear – a nice trick for a big ring – but does look a bit clunky from the reverse. Fortunately you can’t see the fix when it is being worn, so I’ve elected to leave it as-is.

Manufacture:
The focus of the ring is a large, fine, convex slab of deep maroon carnelian agate, carved in intaglio with the likeness of the Greek goddess Demeter. The carnelian measures  19mm x 13.5mm.

The carnelian is set into a 14ct rose gold bezel with a decorative border. The gold is unmarked but has been verified by XRF test. The face of the ring measures 21mm x 16.8mm. It sits 3.7mm high on the finger. The band is a vintage 9ct rose gold “comfort fit” wedding band, hallmarked 375 to the inside.
Weighs 6.3 grams.

Size P or 7.75
Unsure about resizing, I think it should be ok, but would like to confirm with my bench before making any promises. Please get in touch if you would need this ring resized. I will be happy to do some fact finding and provide a quote.

Condition:
The intaglio and gold border are in overall excellent condition. As noted above the ring has had its original band replaced with a wedding band. Ready for immediate and everyday wear.
