Classic Acanthus : Colonial Australian Engraved 18ct Wide Gold Ring

Sold

A deliciously decadent wide old gold ring with full rich patina acquired over 150 years. This band bears the small crown hallmark used by a handful of South Australian jewellers from the early days of the colony, circa approximately 1850s – 1890’s, which will delight collectors of early Australian jewellery.

The ring is finely hand engraved with acanthus leaves – a classical symbol used since the 5th C and synonymous with The Arts during the Victorian Era. This motif was employed in architecture, carpentry, textiles and of course jewellery. A blank space remains that was intended for a monogram.

Manufacture:
The ring is 6mm wide and 0.9mm thick. The inner edge is bevelled for a comfort fit. Marked 18c to the inside of the band, alongside that sweet little crown mark. The gold content has been verified by XRF test. It weighs 3 grams.

The ring is a size N or 6.75 but will fit smaller due to the width. (It fits my size M finger (6.25) deliciously.)
it could be resized at the monogram area, but I wouldn’t.

Condition:
In absolutely perfect original condition with barely any signs of wear – this treasure has been squirrelled away somewhere safe for a very long time indeed. Ready for immediate and everyday wear.
