Blue Moon : Edwardian Honeymoon Crescent Moon Brooch Circa 1907

♥Sold♥

A sweet and sentimental ‘honeymoon’ brooch from the Edwardian era, these tokens of affection were traditionally given by the groom to his bride in the first year of marriage. Most sentimental items from this period are replete with romantic coded symbols, and this piece is no exception.

The crescent moon shape was in reference to young love – growing over time. The trefoil shapes are stylised clover leaves, white clover meaning “promises”. Pearls were also believed to represent purity, so that’s a doubly nice little leaf. The imitation sapphires (garnet topped doublets) are believed to brings gifts of fulfilment, joy, prosperity, inner peace and beauty – or they may be in reference to the wedding date or recipients birthday (Sapphire is the gemstone of the month of  September). A length of golden rope runs along the inside of the crescent, this rope would reference strength, durability and adaptability.
All in all a wonderful love note that anyone would be pleased to wear.
