Ancient Forest : Vintage Baltic Butterscotch Amber Graduated Bead Necklace

♥Sold♥

A collar length necklace of vintage graduated natural butterscotch amber beads with a 9ct gold clasp dating to the first half of the 20th Century, circa 1940 or possibly a little earlier.

Natural amber is the fossilised resin of ancient tree sap, preserved and transformed deep underground over millions of years. Most amber specimens are between 30 000 to 60 000 years old. Natural amber is buoyant and will float, it washes ashore on the beaches of the Baltic Sea where it is collected and shaped into beautiful beads.
Amber comes in a variety of colours, this strand is a semi-opaque medley of butterscotch hues.

Manufacture:
This strand of natural amber beads consists of 39 smooth graduated oval beads and fastens with a 9ct yellow gold bolt ring and loop.
The largest central bead measures 20.2mm x 15mm and the smallest measures 8.35 mm x 5.9mm.
The necklace is 42cm long.
Weighs 17.5 grams.

Condition:
Excellent. The strand has been freshly restrung. The only fault to note is that the very last and smallest bead is slightly irregular at one end. This is not noticeable when worn, but mentioned for transparency.
